Financing Sustainable Energy through Remittances Flows

The project, which is funded under the auspices of a contract awarded to Gaia Consulting by the Nordic Development Fund and to the Basel Agency for Sustainable Energy (BASE) by the Harder Trust, will deliver small-scale renewable energy and energy efficiency products and technologies in Bolivia financed through remittances. The goal of the project is to reduce green house gas (GHG) emissions and improve resilience of low-income households to climate impacts on the energy sector. The project also aims to reduce the cost for energy in urban and rural low-income households and to raise awareness about cleaner and less energy intensive energy sources. The project will achieve its aims by setting up an innovative financing mechanism that links remittances with the financing of RE and EE products and technologies. The goal is to encourage Bolivian migrant populations in Spain to use part of their remittance flows to purchase renewable energy products or more efficient appliances for their relatives in Bolivia. A financial mechanism will be provided for the Bolivian migrant workers residing abroad to help them finance the products.

The intended result is to enable the purchase of a minimum of 5,000 RE and EE devices over a 24 month period benefiting approximately 25,000 people during the pilot project life cycle.. The project aims at achieving significant GHG emission reductions, with direct emission reduction of up to 2420 tCO2e per year. Due to the long life time of the devices, the positive climate benefits will continue beyond the timeframe of project implementation.
